What is this place called Bequia, or in Carib Indian, ‘Island in the Clouds’? Yes, that’s what is looks like when arriving by plane. Bequia is approximately seven square miles with a small airport, but many people still arrive by boat. The main harbor, Admirality Bay, is where boats are moored. One can find boutique shops and cafes along the waterfront or head into Port Elizabeth, where there are open-air markets, supplies, and more.
Bequia is not ostentatious, noisy, or glamorous. People are friendly and the dress is casual (be sure to pack your flip-flops). Exploring the island, you’ll see palm tree groves, farmers, homesteaders, and occasional goats, cows and chickens. Vacationers have many activities from which to choose, the likes of which include snorkeling and scuba diving, trekking, boating and sailing, shopping, and dining.
Hang out at one of the beaches such as Princess Margaret Beach, Spring Bay, Industry Bay, Friendship Bay, or Lower Bay. Take a day trip to Tobago Cays, cruise on the ship Friendship Rose, visit the Turtle Sanctuary, attend a jump-up (Carib Indian for ‘dance’), or sip rum punch poolside with a good book and friends.
Even though the island is small, it is not without entertainment. Perennial events include the Bequia Carnival, Bequia Music Festival (late January), Fisherman’s Day, and the Easter Regatta (late March). Whatever your pleasure, you are sure to enjoy Bequia’s world-class beaches, stunning views, local Caribbean food and music, and friendly people. What are you waiting for?
